Education Initiatives

PAWS has initiated educational events on Paxos on animal welfare since 2006.

Animal Action from GAWF in Athens gave speeches to both adult and children audiences in 2006. Subsequently PAWS provided leaflets on animal welfare and neutering that were distributed all over the island for quite a few years.

In April 2015 PAWS was delighted to invite a group of 30 school children to the clinic as part of a worldwide volunteering project called “Lets do it Greece”. Our resident charity UK vet Russell Lyon explained with the help of Faye as interpreter about how the charity works and demonstrated all the equipment. All the children were very engaged and particularly fascinated by the pulse oxymeter. Most of the children had a pet at home and were keen to support animal welfare.

Early in 2016, meetings were arranged with the Hunters Association, where our vet Russell Lyon provided information about the benefits of micro-chipping, neutering and the prevention and treatment of Leishmaniasis.

In 2019 Kelly Craig from the Dogs Trust UK provided animal welfare work books and gave a series of talks to the school children.

Sadly due to Covid we were unable to organize any educational events between 2020 and 2023.

However we were so pleased when Greek vet, Lefteris Gallidis agreed to host a school trip when he visited PAWS clinic at the end of February 2024. The children were very enthusiastic and the whole visit was a great success.

Subsequently an older group of school children visited PAWS clinic and were shown round by our Greek vet Nefeli Damigou.

School children from different age classes visit PAWS clinic every year. They get to meet cats and dogs being hosted at the clinic facilities, learn about their stories, get to spend time with them, meet our vet teams, learn about responsible pet ownership, about how to take care of a pet, about all the positive aspects of neutering and microchipping.

Children are the best ambassadors towards a stray free community and we love to host them at our premises.

Our volunteers check the messages every day but please be patient if you don’t receive an immediate reply. We have only a small team of volunteers on Paxos who have full time jobs in the summer so please be considerate when you contact us.
