Veterinary Services

Since its first years of action, Paws brought UK vet teams on Paxos to set up a trap – neuter – release (TNR) process in order to start controlling the number of stray cats on the island. Back then there was no veterinary care on Paxos. Locals had never seen a neutered cat or dog and they had to travel outside Paxos for veterinary services.

Currently PAWS manages to neuter about 500 stray cats per year. Our volunteers network helps trap and release, while our veterinary team (scientifically responsible vet Nefeli Damigou and assisting vet, Spyros Outsetaris) neuter, microchip, vaccinate stray cats once a week, usually each Wednesday at the Municipal Veterinary Clinic in Magazia.

Citizens also bring over stray cats from their neighborhoods in order to neuter and release.

Locals and tourists report stray cats with health issues, accidents, entrapped animals in danger etc.

Animals in need of long term treatment are hosted at the Veterinary Clinic facilities and looked after by PAWS volunteers under the supervision of our Municipal Vet, Nefeli Damigou.

Paws teams deal with emergencies of any kind regarding any type of animal. We have dealt over the years apart from dogs and cats, with turtles, tortoises, birds like seagulls and barn owls, goats, chickens, donkeys, bunnies, and rabbits.

Unfortunately the Municipality does not have trained staff for the TNR, and the collection of ill or heart animals. It does not have a suitable car to transport the animals to and from the clinic. PAWS volunteers do all this after responding to calls using their own cars, selflessly abandoning their own work or time with their family or personal free time to respond as quickly as possible to a call about an animal in need.

Consequently, please try to be precise, when you call with information about an animal in need. If you can spare the time to take an animal to the vet on your own, it would be a great help to our PAWS team. You will not be asked to pay.

Get in touch now

Our volunteers check the messages every day but please be patient if you don’t receive an immediate reply. We have only a small team of volunteers on Paxos who have full time jobs in the summer so please be considerate when you contact us.
